Description
“Picture with Kyanite” is a prototype ring handcrafted in sterling silver. A cylindrical kyanite setting forms the center of the composition.
The ring is intentionally substantial and weighty. At 21.4 g including the stone, it reads not as a delicate ornament but as a complete silver object worn on the hand.
Two distinct textures meet in this piece. The inner concave surface is worked with rounded indentations, giving it greater depth and irregularity.
The outer radiating surface is embossed with a texturing hammer. It spreads from the center, creating a sense of tension around the stone.
The silver is patinated. The darkened finish emphasizes the relief, recesses and radiating texture, making the kyanite more prominent within the composition.
Mass, texture and the central setting are essential here. The ring resembles a small painting in which metal is not a background but an expressive surface in its own right.
Recreating the Piece
A similar piece can preserve the essential character: a substantial form, central setting, patina and the contrast of two metal textures.
For a custom commission, the size and proportions can be adjusted, the stone replaced and the embossed texture reworked.
The construction can also be changed more substantially, though the result would become a new piece inspired by this form rather than a direct repeat.
