How to Find Someone’s Ring Size Secretly
If the ring is meant to be a surprise, you can still estimate the size quite accurately. The most reliable approach is to use a ring the person already wears, measure its inside diameter, or ask someone close to them for help. Below are the methods ranked from the most reliable to the most approximate.
What you can do without asking directly
The closer a method gets to the actual inside dimensions of a ring that already fits, the lower the risk of choosing the wrong size. For a gift, one objective measurement is far more useful than trying to estimate size from someone’s appearance.
Measure an existing ring
Use a ring the person actually wears on the finger you are buying for and measure its inside diameter from inner edge to inner edge. A caliper is best, but a ruler with millimeter markings can still give a useful preliminary measurement.

If you cannot borrow the ring for long, place it on a sheet of paper and carefully trace the inside circumference. Then measure the circle you have drawn. It is less accurate than measuring the ring directly, but much more reliable than guessing from the person’s hand.
Trace the inner edge, not the outside of the ring.Photograph the ring next to a ruler
Put the ring and ruler on the same flat surface and photograph them from directly above. The inside diameter can then be estimated from the image. The less perspective distortion there is and the clearer the millimeter marks are, the better the result.
A coin can also provide scale, but a ruler is usually easier and more precise.Ask someone close to them for help
A friend, sibling or other close person may be able to find out naturally during a conversation, while trying on jewelry, or during a visit to a jewelry store. For a surprise gift, this is often the simplest way to get a real size rather than an estimate.
Ask them to find out the size of the specific finger if possible.Try their ring on your own finger
If you only have the ring for a minute, slide it onto one of your fingers without forcing it and mark where it stops. Later, measure the circumference of your finger at that point. This can work as a rough method, but finger shapes differ, so it is not as reliable as a direct measurement.
Never force someone else’s ring over your knuckle.Do not rely on a photo of the hand alone
Height, weight, clothing size, finger length and a hand photograph may suggest general proportions, but they do not provide a dependable ring size. Even a few tenths of a millimeter in inside diameter can noticeably change the fit.
Use appearance only as a last rough clue, not as a measurement.

An open ring is a legitimate fine-jewelry construction
If you are not certain about the exact size, an open construction can sometimes be the more practical choice. When the design is intentionally made to allow limited adjustment, the opening can provide a small range of fit and reduce the risk of a sizing mistake when buying a gift.
An open band does not turn a ring into costume jewelry. If the ring is made from sterling silver, gold or another precious metal, the material remains exactly that. And when the piece is conceived and made by an author as an independent work, it remains author-made jewelry whether the band is completely closed or intentionally open.

Important: “open” does not mean “fits every size.” The possible adjustment depends on the design, metal thickness, band width, stones and setting. A well-designed adjustable ring should be engineered for that movement. Do not repeatedly bend a finished silver ring yourself: the metal can deform, and stone settings may loosen.

This is not a laboratory scale, but a practical guide: the more directly a method measures a ring or finger, the lower the chance of ending up with the wrong size.

With a wide ring, guessing matters even more
A wide or substantial ring has more contact with the finger, so the same nominal size can feel tighter than a narrow band. The knuckle, the inside profile of the ring and the specific construction also affect fit.
If the gift must remain a surprise, it is better to give the maker the inside diameter of a ring that fits, a photograph of that ring next to a ruler, or at least an approximate size together with an explanation of how you obtained it. That is much more useful than simply saying, “they have slender fingers.”
